You have to choose foods, that takes longer to digest. That way your stomach stays busy longer and you don't get hungry soon. For example what do you think takes longer to digest, a piece of stake or beef franks, mashed potatoes or whole grain bread (not white bread). The are: It takes longer to digest stake and bread. Mashed potatoes almost melts in your mouth, so it is very easy for body to completely digest and turn it into energy.
This big burst of energy in form of blood sugar circulates through your body. If there is no immediate need for it like active physical work or training, then within couple of hours it goes in to storage in form of fat.
It would not have any bad affect on your body if you ate lots of carbohydrates or had a lot of sugary soda and go for a long run within 2 hours. Then all excessive blood sugar is used for moving muscles and nothing gets stored.
