Browsing online I came across some presentation that had bold statement across “Gym membership working against you”. I thought what is that? Are they talking about some hidden fees or something. The presentation was not about hidden fees or other ways to get in to your wallet. It was about how majority of people joining the gym does not have clear map how their workout plan should look like to get results they want. When you walk in to any big sports club first thing you see is a lot of people running on treadmills and elliptical machines for a long periods of time. And after that there are many other stations where you can work different sections of your body.

My main point is not about how many stations there are, or how they work. I am very strong believer in full body workouts (getting the most in the least time possible), not long jogs or running laps on treadmill.
I must admit like most of you I hate cardio and running, but I know that it is good and fast way to raise your heart rate. That is why in workout videos I always start with little bit of cardio exercises like jump rope skipping or mountain climbers in fast pace.

Running or jogging (cardio exercises) is good and fast way to burn calories. It burns calories not fat, calories equals energy not fat and you have to have energy to burn, energy means carbohydrates because that is the fuel for the body, not fat.

Catabolism is a process in the body when in order to get more energy after all the carbohydrates have been used up, body starts to break down muscle to turn it in to energy. Human body prefers to break down muscle than fat for energy reserve.

This is the explanation why long jogs and long exercise sessions might work against you. When you workout for too long, body runs out of energy and starts using your muscle tissue as source of gasoline to keep going. It happens because it is much easier to convert muscle in to energy than it is to convert fat. So if you want to keep the muscle tone and loose the fat you have to have a good meal full of good carbs before you go for 45min run. In this case if you go for a long run after you had a nice plate of Italian pasta, you will burn all the carbohydrates you have got from pasta and still keep you hard earned muscle tone.

This is not my rant against sports clubs. Sports clubs are awesome place to workout when you know what you need and you have a clear workout routine plan. For some people gym membership is like exercise buddy that motivates you and makes you workout even when you don’t feel like it.
